The Miami Marlins' ballpark sat mostly empty Monday, which will likely be the case all year, and team owner Jeffrey Loria leaned his back against the bar in a hospitality area, sipping water in circumstances that warranted stronger stuff.

Happy hour, it was not. As part of a three-day public relations blitz, Loria met with a dozen writers and tried to put a positive spin on his widely mocked offseason decisions.

After the Marlins' dismal first season in their new home, Loria said, the roster dismantling he ordered was the right move because they were headed in the wrong direction. He said a return to payroll austerity was needed because the Marlins lost tens of millions of dollars in 2012 after an unprecedented spending spree.

The Marlins will eventually spend again, and they want to sign precocious slugger Giancarlo Stanton to a multiyear contract, Loria said. He said he understands why fans are upset but hopes they will embrace this year's young, unproven team, which many expect to lose 100 games.

''We had to turn back the clock for the moment and push the restart button, '' Loria said, ''and get these young players in here and get them together and look where we are in another year or so. ''

His 30-minute session with reporters was part of an effort to rehabilitate the reputation of the Marlins and their owner.

Angry fans have complained they expected the new ballpark to mean competitive payrolls for more than just one season. Instead they endured the latest in a series of payroll purges, which made the franchise the butt of jokes around the country.

Loria is widely viewed as the culprit.

''It's a constant, sometimes personal pounding, '' Marlins president David Samson said after Loria had left the room. ''It's hard for anyone. On top of that, you're writing checks. It's hard. But I understand every side. ''

Loria remained silent through the offseason but hired a national public relations firm, and his attempt at damage control began Sunday with an open letter to fans published in several media outlets. He plans to make his spring-training debut Tuesday and face TV cameras, hoping to change the subject.

''Maybe we could take a little timeout here, '' he said, a PR aide at his side.

Loria expressed sympathy for fans and his departed players, and saved his harshest words for the Miami Dolphins, who are seeking tax money to help upgrade their stadium. The Dolphins have stressed that their plan is much different from the widely criticized financing agreement for the Marlins' ballpark, built mostly with public money.

''That smear campaign? '' Loria said. ''I'm sure it's just their effort in order to get their deal done. Listen, I hope the Dolphins get their deal. But it has nothing to do with us. ''

Loria conceded the 2012 season was awful. He went on a spending binge and added All-Stars Jose Reyes, Mark Buehrle and Heath Bell, along with manager Ozzie Guillen, but Miami finished last in the NL East.

All are now gone, with Reyes and Buehrle going to Toronto via a blockbuster trade.

''We didn't break up the 1927 Yankees, '' Loria said. ''We broke up a losing ballclub that was going nowhere. ''

Last week, Reyes said Loria encouraged him to buy a house in South Florida, then traded him two days later.

''What you were told is inaccurate, '' Loria said. ''I haven't told him to buy a house. ''

Stanton was among those upset by the trade, and there's speculation he'll soon join the long list of Marlins stars to depart over the years. Loria said he'd like to sign Stanton to a long-term deal, but not this season.

''We're absolutely hoping that moment will come, '' Loria said. ''We will cross that bridge at the appropriate moment, absolutely. ''

The projected payroll for this year is less than $45 million, which would likely be the smallest in the majors. Loria said he expects it to begin rising again, but it may be a long time before the Marlins return to last year's $90 million level.

''We're never going to get to $100 million, '' Loria said. ''We don't have the TV contract to do that. ''

The Marlins' local TV revenue is the lowest in the majors under a deal that runs until 2020, Loria said.

Attendance is another problem. The turnstile count in the new ballpark last year was 1. 4 million, 1 million below expectations, Samson said. He said season ticket sales were barely 12, 000, and for this year they're below 5, 000, with most of that drop-off projected even before the Toronto trade that so angered fans.

Many of them want Loria out, but he said the team's not for sale.

''I'm interested in making this successful, '' he said. And then he took another sip of water.

LSU can make the employing of Camera Cameron because offensive planner official upon Friday, since the Tigers turn to boost a good offense which underwhelmed sometimes last period. Current unpleasant coordinator Greg Studrawa will probably move to offensive collection coach, that ought to help the actual Bayou Bengals in advance. Meanwhile, quarterbacks trainer Steve Kragthorpe most likely will presume an admin role.

Using the former Baltimore Ravens OC entering the image, Tiger enthusiasts should obtain excited.

Cam Cameron would be the new OC from LSU.

Students of the actual "Air Coryell" criminal offense from North park Chargers renowned head trainer Don Coryell, Cameron did with long term NFL quarterbacks for example Elvis Grbac in the college degree at The state of michigan, and he or she was the top coach from Indiana whenever Antwaan Randle El had been confounding defenses together with his dual-threat abilities. When he or she moved on to become a good offensive coordinator in the NFL degree, he caused future Professional Bowl quarterbacks Came Brees as well as Philip Streams. Most lately, he assisted tutor May well Flacco prior to the Baltimore QB assisted lead the actual Ravens towards the Super Dish.

So LSU is unquestionably bringing within an accomplished thoughts to Baton Rouge. Which is very good news for Zach Mettenberger and also the Tigers' criminal offense.

Because associated with his work on Indiana, we understand what Cameron can get free from players which weren't respected prospects appearing out of high college. But in the NFL degree, he additionally greatly been successful with dropback pro-style passers, that fits Mettenberger's design.

Because restricted ends really are a vital a part of Cameron's criminal offense, Mettenberger can better make use of his security options upon shorter paths while additionally hitting all of them down the actual seams. As the Tigers might not turn among their TEs in to prolific Charger Antonio Entrance, that placement is heavily found in Cameron's plan. Travis Dickson as well as perhaps JUCO move Logan Stokes need to be smiling in the thought.

Cameron also loves to employ their tailbacks as well as fullbacks because pass-catchers from the backfield with this offense too, as LaDainian Tomlinson as well as Ray Rice discovered. While he or she still will use a power-run online game as mind coach L'ensemble des Miles enjoys, Cameron can make sure players like a healthy Alfred Azure and Jeremy Slope become much better pass-catchers.

However, ultimately, Mettenberger can get to consider shots lower the field with this offense. Once again, Miles loves the ability run online game. And therefore does Cameron. However the new OC likes to go aerial, and Mettenberger may have almost their entire getting corps back aside from Russell Shepard.

A person who put for more than 200 back yards in 4 of their final 5 games associated with 2012 might be primed for any breakout 12 months.

And which has to help to make Bayou Bengal enthusiasts smile.

Dennis Dixon hasn't thrown a pass in an NFL game since Week 2 of the 2010 season when he started the first two games for the Pittsburgh Steelers while Ben Roethlisberger served a suspension. In fact, Dixon has just 59 pass attempts through his first four NFL seasons.

He left the Steelers last offseason hoping to find an opportunity to compete for a starting job, but found tepid interest - to put it mildly - on the free-agent market and eventually signed with the Baltimore Ravens' practice squad. He has spent the season holding a clipboard behind Joe Flacco and Tyrod Taylor, but has been thrust back into the limelight this week even though he won't be active for Super Bowl XLVII on Sunday.

With his former college head coach, Chip Kelly, taking over the Philadelphia Eagles, there is wide speculation that Dixon will be in the mix in Philadelphia next season.

Dixon told The Sports Xchange that he is "tight" with Kelly, but that the two haven't spoken since the Ravens' bye in Week 8.

Dixon is well-versed in Kelly's spread option, and the breakout seasons for mobile quarterbacks who can run the read-option such as the San Francisco 49ers' Colin Kaepernick, the Washington Redskins' Robert Griffin III and the Seattle Seahawks' Russell Wilson only adds to the speculation that Dixon will finally get the opportunity he has been seeking in Philadelphia next season.

"I'm always looking forward to the next opportunity, " said Dixon, who turned 28 on Jan. 11. "I'm being patient, this league is about timing.

"I'm happy for those guys who can show their versatility and can hurt defenses with their legs. Don't take it out of context, those guys can throw. "

An inconsistent arm has been exactly what has held Dixon back to this point in his career. A Heisman Trophy contender in 2007 before tearing his anterior cruciate ligament (which he injured again in 2010), Dixon has completed 59. 3 percent of his career NFL pass attempts with a 71. 4 rating. However, that was with a conservative Steelers' game plan when he was in the lineup to limit his exposure in the downfield passing game.

Whether he can overcome an awkward delivery and shaky mechanics to be more than a backup should he indeed land with the Eagles in the offseason is a question Dixon can attempt to answer beginning next week. For now, he's busy playing Kaepernick in practice, helping the Ravens' defense prepare for the dual-threat they'll try to contain in the Superdome on Sunday.

"I'm not tied up (in next season, " he said. "I'm trying to be the best all-around Colin Kaepernick I can be so that come Sunday our defense is prepared. "

--Player safety remained a hot topic in New Orleans, on the day NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith offered his state of the players' union and before Friday's public address from commissioner Roger Goodell.

Veteran Baltimore Ravens center Matt Birk, who is contemplating retirement, said the issue is far too intricate to be resolved with an amendment here, a rule change there.

"It's a tricky situation, " said Birk, a six-time Pro Bowl selection who turns 36 in July. "As players, we expect to be safe. I think we're taken care of.... Unfortunately, it's part of the game. Guys suffer. Whether that's during your career or after. "

Birk was reminded as a rookie by the leaders in the Minnesota Vikings locker room in 1998 that players didn't always have it as good as they do now. Birk said the change became evident in 1994, but that a long battle isn't over. For that reason, Birk said he plans to donate his brain for research when he dies. He does worry occasionally about his mind in day-to-day life.

"I equate it to being an organ donor, " Birk said. "This is a terrible pun, but it's a no-brainer. "

--Ravens offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell has known the Harbaugh family for almost 40 years.

Jack Harbaugh, the father of Ravens head coach John Harbaugh and 49ers coach Jim, was the secondary coach at Iowa when Caldwell was recruited by and ultimately signed with the Hawkeyes. Jack Harbaugh left before Caldwell's freshman season to be an assistant coach at Michigan.

"I have known the family, know their character, for a lot of years, " Caldwell told The Sports Xchange.

That made his decision to join the Ravens' coaching staff in January 2012, after he was fired as head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, an easy decision. Caldwell, who interviewed with general manager Ozzie Newsome and owner Steve Biscotti in 2008, holds no animosity toward John Harbaugh, who was hired for the position. Caldwell also said he wasn't disappointed not to get a shot at one of the NFL's head-coaching vacancies this offseason.

"I worry about things I can control, " Caldwell said. "In Proverbs 16: 9 it says, 'The man can plot his course, but the lord determines his steps. ' I believe that to be the case. It's just the way things are and we have to be able to make the best of it. "

Jeff Reynolds contributed to this report.

A 20-story-high mural of the Lombardi Trophy, affixed to the glass exterior of a bustling hotel that was once a shattered symbol of Hurricane Katrina's devastation, rises like a beacon above the expansive white roof of the Superdome.

The Super Bowl is back in the Big Easy, finally, after 11 years, giving New Orleans a spotlight of global proportion to showcase how far it has come since Katrina left the city on its knees and under water in August of 2005.

''The story is much, much bigger than the Super Bowl, '' Mayor Mitch Landrieu said Monday afternoon. ''This is a story about the resurrection and redemption of a great American city.

''The Super Bowl gives us an opportunity to reflect on where we've been and where we're going. ''

From 1970 to 2002, New Orleans was a regular host of the Super Bowl and hopes to become one again. This Sunday, when the Baltimore Ravens meet the San Francisco 49ers in the Superdome, the Crescent City will host the NFL's marquee game for the 10th time, tying Miami for the most of any city. If all goes well, it hopes to get back in the rotation.

Jay Cicero, president of the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation, said his group will ask the NFL for permission to put together a bid for the 2018 Super Bowl, coinciding with the city's celebration of its 300th anniversary.

It is that history, which produced a colorful culture driven by a mix of European, Caribbean and African influences, that makes New Orleans such an attractive Super Bowl city, noted political consultant James Carville said.

''This is not just a city. This is a culture, '' said Carville, who lives in New Orleans and serves as the co-chairman of the Super Bowl host committee with his wife and fellow political pundit, Mary Matalin. ''We have our own food, our own music, our own social structure, our own architecture, our own body of literature. By God, we have our own funerals. ''

Carville pointed out that Dallas spent about $38 million to host a super Bowl two seasons ago, that Indianapolis spent about $25 million a year ago, and that New Orleans spent about $13 million.

''I wish that i could tell you that it's because we're just so much more efficient, '' Carville said. ''The truth of the matter is we don't have to create anything in New Orleans. It's here. It's been here for 294 years. We just have to take what we have, shine it up a little bit, add a little something here and there - but 294 years of history and culture stand on its own. ''

Of course, Carville was not counting the billions of dollars spent in the past seven-plus years to rebuild New Orleans since Katrina pushed tidal surges through crumbling levees and flooded 80 percent of the city.

Extensive renovations to the Superdome, done in several phases during six years, ran about $336 million, transforming the stadium to a facility better equipped to host a super Bowl than it was back in 2002. The lower bowl has all new seats, wider concourses and more concession areas, not to mention exclusive ''bunker'' clubs for those who pay top dollar. There are four high-end club lounges around the second deck which did not exist before the storm. The smaller suites ringing the stadium have all been remodeled and more have been added to total 152.

The faded gray siding that lined the stadium when the Super Bowl was last played there has been replaced. The dents from flying storm debris are gone and it has been restored to its original, glistening champagne color, which serves as the canvass for nightly light shows. The roof was completely rebuilt and there is now a public plaza called Champions Square adjacent to the dome, where part of a shopping mall used to be.

The Louis Armstrong International airport has undergone $350 million in upgrades, with work going on right up until this month.

Streets throughout much of the city, including downtown and the French Quarter, have been repaved.

A new streetcar line, which opened on Monday morning, can shuttle people from the city's main train and bus station a few blocks from the Superdome to Canal Street, where downtown meets the French Quarter.

There are more restaurants in the metro area than before Katrina. Hotels throughout downtown have been renovated and some new ones have gone up, adding more than 4, 000 more rooms than there were in 2005.

The 1, 200-room Hyatt Hotel, with the signature giant Lombardi Trophy mural,, finally reopened a little more than a year ago after a $275 million renovation. During Katrina, hundreds of its windows blew out, leaving shredded curtains flapping in the wind. Now it is home to new restaurants and rebuilt convention space.

''The city looks great, '' said Jerry Romig, the Saints' 83-year-old public address announcer, a lifelong New Orleans resident who has been involved in some capacity in the previous nine Super Bowls. ''It's never looked better. ''

He also takes issue with the idea that sympathy for New Orleans' suffering played a role in NFL owners awarding the city this Super Bowl.

''The New Orleanean's attitude is they would be very upset if the NFL was going to throw you a bone because you went through a hard time, '' Romig said. ''The New Orleanean would think, 'We should get this game every year because we're the best place for it. '... We've got everything that's necessary to make it a success and that's being shown better this year than past years. ''

Pockets of the city still bear obvious scars from Hurricane Katrina, most notably in eastern and low-lying portions of the city - like the lower Ninth Ward - were many homes were wiped out and many residents were too poor to rebuild.

So-called ''Katrina tours'' are still offered, with vans carting the curious to areas where they can see the remnants of the devastation - abandoned, crumbling homes and schools, and streets overgrown with weeds and brush.

When the city was bidding for the 2013 Super Bowl, it floated the idea of a Super Saturday of Service, whereby volunteers could undertake community projects to improve the city. This Saturday, restoration work will be done on five properties run by the New Orleans Recreational Department, including a high school football field where the Archie Manning's sons once played. After Sunday, the field will be the new home of the turf used in the Super Bowl.

Despite the community's ongoing needs, New Orleans has proved repeatedly in recent years that the heart of the city can successfully stage major national events. It hosted college football's BCS national championships in 2008 and 2012, an NBA All-Star game in 2008 and an NCAA men's Final Four in 2012.

Yet given how New Orleans was once a regular Super Bowl city, the return of the NFL's biggest game carries more symbolic weight than any single event since the storm.

''This is just another huge example of how the people of this city, who were 15 feet under water, are now on top of the world, '' Landrieu said.

The Giants are a better defense when DT Chris Canty is healthy and playing. That’s by no means a stretch.

But he missed most of the first half of the season coming back from offseason knee injury, and though he played very well at times down the stretch, he also re-aggravated that knee. Canty carries a salary-cap value of $6. 5 million into next season, and the team finds itself nearly $5 million over the cap. That’s not a significant number, and cuts will be made to alleviate it.

Will Canty be one of them? It depends mostly on the health of his knee. If he checks out medically, and the Giants determine that he still has some good years left on his body, they’ll keep him in tow. If not, or if they feel like he is in decline physically, the Giants could opt to slice his salary.

The cap number does weigh heavily. Many of the players on the roster with higher cap numbers are likely too valuable to mess with. QB Eli Manning is the franchise bedrock. S Antrel Rolle might have to tweak his number a bit, but he’s a valued leader and performer. ORG Chris Snee might not be as dominant as his reputation suggests, but he’s a fixture.

CB Corey Webster, with a $7 million cap figure, is very much in trouble. He had a surprisingly poor season. Would the Giants consider whacking Canty, too? As of now, the feeling is no. But that could change over time if the feeling is that his knee is not up to snuff and he no longer can have that positive impact on the unit.

Jaromir Jagr wants to show he has a little something left. The 40-year-old is off to a pretty good start.

Jagr scored twice, assisted on the game-winner and had a hand in all four goals in his Dallas debut, and the Stars opened the lockout-shortened season with a 4-3 victory against the Phoenix Coyotes on Saturday night.

''Too bad they signed him, '' said Radim Vrbata, who had two goals and an assist for the Coyotes. ''For me, a Czech guy, that's what he does. He played in Czech during the lockout the whole time and you can see he knows what he's doing out there. ''

Coming off career lows in goals and points last season in Philadelphia after spending three years playing in Russia, Jagr scored the first Dallas goal of the season, pulled the Stars even at 2-all with his 667th career goal late in the second period and assisted on both third-period goals.

''Don't get used to it, guys, '' joked Jagr, the NHL's active leader in goals, assists and points.

''It was strange. We had only one week in training camp. I had to get used to new teammates, too, and we didn't have a chance to play any games this season. ''

It can't really be called beginner's luck, though, for a player with 1, 347 career games and 1, 657 points.

Loui Eriksson, who scored the game-winner on an assist from Jagr, was 5 when the nine-time All-Star won the first of back-to-back Stanley Cup titles alongside Mario Lemieux in 1991.

''Jump on 68's coattails tonight, '' Stars captain Brenden Morrow said. ''He really settled some things down for us tonight on the power play when we were kind of struggling to get some good looks. A heck of a player. ''

Eriksson broke a 3-all tie when he took a pass from Jagr in the slot and beat Mike Smith with 6: 55 left in the third period.

The sequence started with a turnover by Martin Hanzal in Phoenix's defensive zone. Jagr grabbed the rebound in the corner after a hard shot by Derek Roy and found Eriksson alone in front of Smith.

''Both teams give each other some gifts, and we end up giving one more, '' Phoenix coach Dave Tippett said. ''That's a tough way to lose. That's uncharacteristic of our team, but I guess first game coming out, you've got to expect some mistakes. ''

Ray Whitney, Phoenix's leading scorer last season, gave Dallas a 3-2 lead early in the third with a power-play goal on a pass from Jagr. The Coyotes answered quickly with Vrbata's second goal on a breakaway after Jordie Benn gave away the puck at center ice.

The Stars spent 10 of the first 15 minutes of the second period killing penalties and it cost them a 1-0 lead.

Dallas killed a four-minute power play after a high stick by Philip Larsen drew blood from David Moss and led to a brief delay for a cleanup on the ice.

The Stars couldn't get through a regular two-minute penalty a short time later. Matthew Lombardi's pass across the ice to Vrbata drew Kari Lehtonen's attention, and Vrbata flipped the puck to Lauri Korpikoski for an easy shot into an open net.

The Coyotes, coming off the first trip to the Western Conference finals for a franchise that had just one playoff series win going back to its Winnipeg debut in 1979, went ahead 2-1 after Morrow was called for high sticking.

Vrbata drove a shot with Hanzal shielding Lehtonen, and the puck bounced over the goalie and into the net. Hanzal originally got credit for the goal before a scoring change.

''You get tired killing penalties, '' Dallas defenseman Stephane Robidas said. ''That kind of put them back in the game. We've got to find a way to kill those. ''

Jagr tied it at 2-all with his second goal late in the second when a shot by Robidas was blocked, but Jagr found the puck first in the slot and shot it past Smith.

Jagr's first goal was assisted by Eriksson, who found his new linemate alone with the puck in front of Smith. The goal was one of the few smooth plays in an otherwise rough opening period that showed signs of the long layoff and short training camp.

Stars newcomer Derek Roy badly misplayed a puck at one blue line and fell down at the other, a sequence that eventually led to Vrbata having a clean shot that Lehtonen stuffed from close range.

About 45 minutes into the Buffalo Sabres' first practice, Jochen Hecht emerged from the dressing room tunnel.

Sticking with tradition, his teammates tapped the ice with their sticks Sunday in tribute to the veteran center.

Hecht, the longest-tenured member of the team with nine seasons, returned from his club in the German league to take part in the Sabres' opening workout since the NHL lockout ended.

''It was fun, '' Hecht said. ''It was a good feeling to be back. ''

The Sabres took their physicals in the morning and then held a practice.

Hecht was limited to 22 games last season because of concussion effects. He played six games with Adler Mannheim in Germany during the lockout, scoring five goals and adding eight assists.

''I saw everybody at the physicals. There was some paperwork that had to be finished before I went on the ice, '' he said.

Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said he was glad to have Hecht on the team.

''We felt that for the depth of the organization and in a short (48-game) season... it would be important to get him in, '' Ruff said. ''(He has) ability to help out in a third line role and in a centerman role. ''

The Sabres fell three points short of the playoff spot last season despite an aggressive late push and a roster laden with high-priced players.

With the Sabres playing their season opener next Sunday against Philadelphia, Ruff has only a week to resolve some other roster issues. There's a logjam with nine defensemen in camp, and there is a decision to be made about whether to keep 2012 first-round draft choice Mikhael Grigorenko to help solve a shortage at center.

''It'll be interesting, we have some different pieces, '' Ruff said.

One of those pieces is T. J. Brennan, a 23-year-old who was a second-round draft choice in 2007. He leads AHL Rochester with 14 goals and 35 points in 36 games, and would need to clear waivers if the Sabres want to send him back to the minors.

''You do what you can and control what you can. I think it's a tough choice for them, '' Brennan said. ''I'm sure they'll figure something out in the next few days. I just try to get better and make them make the hard decisions. ''

The 18-year-old Grigorenko, who has 29 goals and 50 points in 32 games for Quebec of the Quebec Major junior league, was enthusiastic after participating in his first professional practice.

''I was really excited and a little bit nervous, '' he said. ''I worked real hard and I think I did well. ''

The rookie, the only player not given a proper stall in the Sabres' dressing room, remained positive about his creature comforts.

''It's better than staying in Quebec, '' he said.

Ruff also had a good first impression of Grigorenko's first practice.

''You notice his playmaking and passing ability, '' Ruff said. ''He moved around the ice pretty good. He looks big out there. He has that way where he turns and protects the puck and does a nice job. ''He doesn't look like a junior player. ''

The craggy lines in his face cut a little deeper. That trademark hitch in his step is a bit more pronounced.

These days, when John Elway scans the field looking to make the perfect move for the Broncos, he is viewing not from under center but from a second-floor office that overlooks the practice field.

At 52, the man who engineered The Drive and so many other great comebacks during a Hall of Fame career is producing yet another one - maybe the most important he's been part of. He is resurrecting Pat Bowlen's franchise, turning it from an out-of-touch, losing laughingstock back into a fan-friendly Super Bowl contender.

Whether the Broncos make it to New Orleans or not this season, Elway has already accomplished the first mission simply by coming back to run Denver's front office.

''The first order of business, in my mind, was to connect back to our fans, '' he told The Associated Press in an interview from his office, a jar of jelly beans on the desk, a magnetic Broncos depth chart hanging on the wall.

On Saturday, the Broncos play Baltimore in the AFC divisional round. They are on an 11-game winning streak and favored to go to the Super Bowl for the first time since Elway hoisted the Lombardi Trophy at the end of the 1998 season.

''Somehow, we lost that connection, '' Elway said. ''At least, it had never been like that since I'd been here. The disconnect was there, you could feel it. The fans didn't feel like they were part of the organization. ''

Though it was Denver's magical 1977 ''Orange Crush'' Super Bowl team that sparked Broncomania, it was Elway's arrival six seasons later that turned the relationship between team and fans into a much more personal affair. As the best player coming out of college, Elway was headed to the Baltimore Colts, who held the first pick in the draft. He balked, and the impression was he would end up only where he wanted to go.

The Broncos came up with the goods for a trade and Elway said 'yes' to Denver.

Over the next 16 years - including 47 game-saving drives, three Super Bowl losses, countless other heartbreaks and close calls and, then, finally, two titles - No. 7 and the city of Denver became interconnected. Elway chose Denver. Denver loved him back.

As the era of free agency began and the game became more of a business, Elway was a Bronco all the way, one of those increasingly rare instances of a player who spent his entire career with one team.

And after he rode off into the sunset following the second title, things weren't quite the same for the team or the player.

''I wanted to see how it would be when I got away from it for a while, '' Elway said.

He bought car dealerships, got into the restaurant business. He enjoyed success with both, but had trouble staying away from his first love, the game he learned under the guiding hand of his father, Jack, a longtime college head coach before becoming a scout for the Broncos in the 1990s.

''I'm used to having a scoreboard, '' Elway said, ''and there's a scoreboard in football every week. ''

He bought a stake in Denver's Arena League team, which gave him some much-needed practice in how to be involved in football without being on the field.

''That was really hard for me the first two or three years, not being able to get my hands on the ball, '' he said.

But there was no more helpless feeling than being a Broncos alum with no way to help. From afar, Elway watched as his old team went on a slow, steady decline - at the low point, a disgrace with a 4-12 record.

Every quarterback that came through the facility dealt with the same theme: He was playing John Elway's old position. But there would never be another Elway. All the quarterbacks, one way or another, proved that mantra correct.

It reached a critical point when the Broncos hired Josh McDaniels as head coach and McDaniels identified himself as the only NFL personnel man who felt Tim Tebow was worth a first-round draft pick.

The 2010 season in Denver was marred by losing and the McDaniels videotaping scandal. But the biggest question hovering over this franchise was why McDaniels drafted Tebow if he didn't want to play him? McDaniels never really answered that one.

And while the Broncos never saw their string of consecutive sellouts, dating to 1970, jeopardized, the number of empty seats at the stadium, the lustiness of the boos from the fans who did attend, and the discontent that grew on the radio shows and internet sites were impossible to ignore.

''Certainly, there was the idea out there that they not only had to restore themselves competitively, but their image needed massive repair work, '' said Sandy Clough, a longtime veteran of Denver sports talk radio.

In stepped Elway, who quickly established a direct line with fans through the team website and a Twitter account.

He also was quick to point out two facts:

-He was smart enough to know what he didn't know

-The only acceptable goal for the Broncos was winning the Super Bowl.

The second part used to go unsaid in Denver but had gotten lost somewhere amid the turmoil.

Shortly after his hiring, on Jan. 5, 2011, a series of dominoes started falling.

Elway hired coach John Fox, who had already shown his penchant for turnarounds in Carolina.

After a 1-4 start in 2011, Fox put Tebow in the lineup and, with a mix of guts, comebacks and luck, Tebow guided the Broncos to the playoffs, albeit with an 8-8 record.

Elway acknowledged how remarkable Tebow's performances were, but steadfastly refused to anoint him as the quarterback of the future.

A surgically repaired Peyton Manning became available and Elway put the Broncos in the mix to sign him. Then he moved Denver to the front by finding an instant connection with the veteran quarterback.

After signing Manning, Elway made the corresponding decision to part with Tebow - a tough decision, but medicine Tebow fans could swallow more easily knowing who it was coming from.

''The revisionist history is that, 'Oh, anybody could've done that, ''' Clough said. ''I don't agree that anybody could've done that. I think only he could've pulled that off the way he did it. He's the only guy who could've withstood the kind of criticism and wrath... for deigning to be at all critical of Tebow. ''

Elway's deft handling of the Manning-Tebow maneuver has, all by itself, made him a top candidate for executive of the year in the NFL. It has also overshadowed other moves that have played big parts in Denver's quick return to competitiveness. His first move was keeping veteran cornerback Champ Bailey, then a free agent. He also drafted Von Miller, who has 29 1/2 sacks over his first two years.

This season, Elway signed veterans Keith Brooking, Dan Koppen, Trindon Holliday, Brandon Stokley, Jim Leonhard - all important cogs in a 13-3 team.

''He'd been a part of a lot of championship teams, a lot of Super Bowl teams and winners, so he understands what a football player looks like, '' Fox said.

Elway also understands what a city looks like when it loves its football team - and what it looks like when it doesn't.

These days, the love is back, courtesy of No. 7, of course.

''The goal here, with Pat Bowlen, has always been that he wants a super Bowl champion, '' Elway said. ''What everyone needed to remember is that that's still the goal. ''

Adam Greenberg is getting a chance to resume his baseball career with the Baltimore Orioles.

The 31-year-old returned to the major leagues for one at-bat in October, more than seven years after he was beaned in his debut. He agreed to a minor league contract with the Orioles and will have a chance to earn a job at their Triple-A farm team in Norfolk, Va.

''To get the opportunity with the Orioles means everything to me, '' he said Saturday.

He had contacted Baltimore manager Buck Showalter at the winter meetings this month in Nashville, Tenn.

''I just walked up to him, introduced myself, '' Greenberg said. ''I've always kind of looked at Buck and said that would be the guy that i would love to play, that type of hard-nose mentality. ''

Showalter put him in touch with Orioles special assistant Brady Anderson and general manager Dan Duquette.

''I'm going to spring (training) with the opportunity to make the Triple-A squad, '' he said. ''Being 31, they said I'm not going to be going to Double-A and taking away a prospect's spot. It's Triple-A, big leagues - obviously I'm not going to make the big league team out of camp - it's Triple-A, big leagues or nothing, and that's great. ''

Selected by the Chicago Cubs in the ninth round of the 2002 amateur draft, Greenberg made his big league debut as a pinch hitter on July 9, 2005, and was hit on the back of his head with the first pitch from the Marlins' Valerio de los Santos. Greenberg sustained a concussion and was removed for a pinch runner.

Released by the Cubs in June 2006, he had minor league stints with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Kansas City Royals, the speedy outfielder signed a minor league deal with the Cincinnati Reds and was cut at the end of spring training, hampered by a rotator cuff injury. He spent 2009, '10 and '11 with the Bridgeport Bluefish of the independent Atlantic League.

After a petition on Change. org urged a big league team to give him another chance, the Marlins signed him and sent him up as a pinch hitter on Oct. 2 against New york Mets knuckleballer R. A. Dickey. Greenberg struck out on three pitches against the eventual NL Cy Young Award winner.

''The last few years have been very, very difficult and challenging, but I got myself physically where I need to be and more important than anything, mentally I'm at a point in my career where I'm able to commit 110 percent back to the game, '' he said.

His agreement was reported by several media outlets on Thursday.

NOTES: Baltimore assigned OF Steve Pearce outright to Norfolk on Friday.
